From 6 April 2026 the weekly rate is the lower of £123.25 or 80 percent of average weekly earnings, divided by the employee’s qualifying days to give a daily rate. The three waiting days and the lower earnings limit were both abolished, so SSP starts on day one for every employee. It runs for up to 28 weeks, is taxed like normal pay, and cannot be reclaimed from HMRC. Full background in the statutory pay guide.
